Clinics
Navigation may be the most important skill in an adventure race when it is all said and done.
More adventure races have been won because of superior navigation than by any other component of racing.
This year Raid the Rock will host a Beginners and an Advanced Navigation Clinic.
- The Advanced Clinic will focus on improving your navigation skills with helpful racing tips.
We start in the classroom, teaching the skills needed to read and plan using maps as well as race strategy.
Then, when you are ready, we move to an outside course to begin practical training and development.
The clinic will include a 3-5 hour orienteering course for practice, which will include some nighttime navigation.
- The Beginners Clinic will focus on the basics of map and compass.

FAQS
- Is the Raid the Rock Adventure Racing Clinic(s) only for teams?
The clinic(s) train both individuals and teams.
- Is previous experience necessary to participate in the clinic(s)?
Most participants have limited experience in adventure racing while others may have a great deal
of experience in one or two specific sports. Our goal is to establish solid race fundamentals and
to help raise your abilities to the next level. For the more experienced participant, we show you
methods to improve on your weaknesses and ways to refine your existing skills. A basic knowledge
of orienteering is advised to participate in the Advanced Navigation Clinic. No experience is
needed for the Basic Orienteering Clinic.
- Do I have to be in race condition?
No. You must have basic aerobic conditioning but it is not necessary to be at the level you would
need for a race.
- What equipment will I need during the clinic(s)?
You will need a compass, map case, yard stick, a selection of water proof pens/markers and
highlighters, cell phone, water bladder and lunch. Recommended gear includes bug repellent, gaitors or
long pants, and snacks.
- Can children participate in the clinic(s)?
Yes.
- Who will be teaching at the clinic(s)?
The clinic has a number of instructors who have raced at all levels in both national and international
events. Nathan Siria and Greg Eason of Team Traveler and Veronica Battaglia will be the primary
instructors during both clinics.
- Will I be a better racer?
Yes!
